Facts About Accident

Swimming pools, spas, and other recreational outdoor swimming commodities are very popular and attract many people. They are refreshing and an affordable way to relax after a stressful week and are conducive for a friendly family outing. But there are numerous risks involving swimming pools. Namely, they are one of the places where the highest risk of child injuries occur.

Swimming pools are among the highest risk for child accidents and drownings resulting in death than any other single recreational item, commodity, or exercise.

According to the CDC, in 2000 there were approximately 3,300 unintentional drownings in the United States, averaging nine people per day. This does not include drownings in boating-related incidents. These drownings occured in pools, spas, beaches, and lakes.

Most drownings occur in residential swimming pools for children up to the age of four. Most young children who drowned in pools were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes, and were in the care of one or both parents at the time.

For every child who drowns, three receive emergency department care for non-fatal submersion injuries. More than 40% of these children require hospitalization. Brain damage injuries due to prolonged submersion may also result in long-term disabilities ranging from memory problems and learning disabilities to the permanent loss of basic functioning (permanent vegetative state).
